Williston businesses step in to pay for hotel rooms for those still without power

WILLISTON, ND (KXNETName) – With those power outages in Williams Countysome Williston residents are among those still without power.

That’s why a local hotel and a few businesses decided to help out by providing people with accommodation.

“We actually lost power, I think it would be early Sunday morning around 2am, 1:30am,” Shannon Scott said.

That’s when the Microtel Inn & Suites stepped in.

“We don’t want to be a hotel that only accepts incoming oil and gas workers, construction workers. We want to be part of the community in good times and bad. So we felt it was our responsibility to provide these rooms to some of the customers who needed them,” said general manager Gemma Jones.

The hotel and two companies have sponsored over 70 nights for people to stay for free.

“I was like, ‘Oh, let me call the Microtel.’ And she said, “All the rooms are occupied so far, but let me call you back in an hour. And she called me back and said, ‘We could have you for five nights.’ and I just screamed. I couldn’t believe it,” Leah Webb said.

Skin Win Dermatology is one such company.

“We have sponsored five different families who are still without electricity. And got them into hotels so they can stay warm and safe until the power comes back,” said manager/owner Dr. Daniel Hoffman.

Scott and Webb say they’re grateful the community is so helpful.

“The Microtel has been amazing. They were just fantastic getting us there, letting us know everything was taken care of. It’s just less stress for us to have to worry about what’s at home and not worry about it,” Scott said.

“You don’t realize how much electricity means to you. A hot shower, my kids are so grateful to jump on beds in the light,” Webb said.

Dr. Hoffman says Skin Win is challenging other local businesses to help displaced residents still without power.
